Why Squarespace sites lose rankings and conversions
Squarespace sites tend to look great and load a lot of JavaScript to do it. Templates ship a large common bundle plus per-block scripts for galleries, summary blocks and video; image-heavy portfolio and shop pages can weigh several megabytes on mobile. Squarespace serves responsive image variants automatically, but only for images in image blocks – background section images and gallery blocks behave differently.
For SEO, Squarespace’s defaults produce titles like “Page — Site name” everywhere, blank descriptions on collection items, and an indexed tag and category archive for every blog. Sites migrated from older versions often keep a /blog-1 style URL and a redirect list nobody has revisited.
WebVitalist crawls your pages, measures them on a phone, and maps every fix to the corresponding Squarespace panel – Page settings, Marketing → SEO, or Code Injection.
Checks
What we check on Squarespace
On top of the standard technical, performance, accessibility and copy checks, the report looks for the problems specific to Squarespace.
- 01 JavaScript bundle size and block-level scripts on gallery, summary and video sections
- 02 SEO title formats for the site, pages, collections and items
- 03 Blog and product items with empty SEO descriptions
- 04 Indexed tag and category archives and their thin content
- 05 Section background images versus image blocks (responsive variants, lazy loading)
- 06 URL slugs, legacy URLs and the URL Mappings redirect list
- 07 Structured data for products, events and articles emitted by the template
- 08 Contrast and accessible names on template navigation and buttons
Fix Pack · $149
How the Fix Pack works for Squarespace
Each fix names its Squarespace location: Marketing → SEO for site-wide title formats, the page or item’s SEO tab for titles and descriptions, Settings → Advanced → URL Mappings for redirects, and Code Injection for JSON-LD and deferred third-party scripts. Copy rewrites cover hero headlines, page titles and descriptions for your key pages.
FAQ
Squarespace questions, answered.
Do you support Squarespace 7.0 and 7.1?
Yes. The checks are the same; the report notes the version where the fix location differs (for example the Style Editor versus Site Styles).
Can you check my Squarespace Commerce products?
Yes. Product pages are crawled like any other page and checked for titles, descriptions, images and product structured data.
What can I realistically change about Squarespace performance?
Image sizes and formats, the number of gallery and video blocks on key pages, third-party embeds and fonts. The core bundle is Squarespace’s; the report separates what you control from what you do not.
